Alexander Issaris began in April 1981 to record the events of every day and every night in a 100-page booklet. Today, after thirty-six years, his diary numbers heighteen volumes and consists of 1800 pages. When a few months ago he decided to publish a book about his dreams, he found that eighty-five dreams were recorded, which became forty-seven after a very tough selection. This was called the Book of Dreams to reminiscence Andrei Tarkovsky’s Martyrolog. In the Book of Dreams there are dark and bright dreams, symbolic, scary, emotional and erotic. The mother of the artist plays a leading role in them, each time appearing with a different face. The places where many of the dreams happen are Monemvasia, Thessaloniki, Florina, and a mountainous area combining elements of these three cities. The author has found that he often sees the same dream and even on the same date. Many scenes from his childhood and adolescence come up when all his beloved people were alive. Many animals dominate the night time randonees of Isaris: snakes, salamanders, tigers, deer, elephants and many horses. At the end of his introduction, Isaris wonders what the nature and significance of these dreams, for although dozens of studies have been written about them, he believes we can not talk with absolute certainty about something so dark and inexplicable.
