A novel about human bonds and the meaning of freedom, the power of friendship and erotic desire, and the vertigo of the multitude of lives one can live. It follows an intricate pattern of lifelines that unravel and become tangled and sometimes break and unfix, leaving the man alone to travel the long distances he craves.
A writer, single, childless, with a failed emotional life, is experiencing a mid-life crisis. Leaving Paris, he settles in a small town in the southeast of France, seeking the peace and solitude conducive to writing. There, he will meet the friend of his youth, the “hitchhiker,” whose complete family life does not prevent him from going out on the highway, getting into the first car that stops in front of him, and “wherever it takes him.” The immobility of the one, living without love and family ties, is contrasted with the constant movement of the other, the succession of departures and returns. The author, the “hitchhiker,” and his wife will create a love trio that takes rhythm from absence and tone from lack. Poetic and fascinating, Prudhomme’s writing creates suspense with minimal means, captures the intensity of nothingness, and accurately describes the ambivalence of emotions. A brilliant novel about human bonds and the meaning of freedom, the power of friendship and erotic desire, and the vertigo of the multitude of lives one can live.

The whole range of emotions resonates in this novel—delicate, light, and deep at the same time.
An excellent book about friendship, freedom, and faith in the ideals of youth.
The novel narrates the magnetic game of attraction and repulsion that works in all of us. It follows an intricate pattern of lifelines that unravel and become tangled and sometimes break and unfix, leaving the man alone to travel the long distances he craves. Fascinating.
