Weil  wrote her essay “The Iliad or the Poem of Force” just after World War II broke out, at the age of thirty, only four years before her death. Although the epic theme – the war in Troy – relates to the historical context in which Weil was then found, the essay is not merely a reaction to the events, but instead concentrates on crucial points of its contemplation, which went through its most mature phase.  Emphasizing more on the concepts of compassion and generosity than on the ideas of heroism, honor, and legacy on which the value system of each epic narrative is built, the author also invites us to emerge as creatures kinder than our inferior nature often dictates. “The real hero, the real subject, the focus of the Iliad is violence. The violence inflicted by humans, the violence that enslaves humans, the violence in front of which the human flesh shrinks to extinction. In this work, the human spirit appears constantly changing from its correlations with violence, as if it were precisely drawn and blinded by that violence which, is perceived as manageable, bent on the burden of violence to which it is subjected. For those dreamers who once thought that violence, as a result of progress, would soon be a thing of the past, the poem could serve as a historical document; others, who can recognize, both in the present and in the past, the concept of violence as the nuclear element of the entire history of humanity, perceive the Iliad as the most beautiful and clearest of the mirrors that indicate this concept. ” S.
