In the first decades of the twenty-first century, political theorists, artists, and novelists assert that liberal democracy is disintegrating. Old objections to the shallow and weak character of this democracy are returning more harshly, coupled with a severe identity crisis of the Western paradigm.

In his new essay, Nicolas Sevastakis returns to the issue of the critique of culture and how it intersects with the demands of political thought. Passing through Michel Houellebecq’s aphorisms and narratives of the decline of the West in the aloof diagnoses of political analysts, the author discusses the controversial identities of democracy.

Two questions run through the book: can ideas and arrangements inherited from earlier urban times withstand the shock of today’s relentless transformations? Can the political debate on democracy leave out deep, anthropological questions about our destination? The author regards suspiciously the easy disassembly of liberal democracies from some theorists and artists. At the same time, however, he stresses that alarms are necessary and believes that we do not have the right to close our eyes to the political failures and cultural challenges that surround us.
