Evangelos Zachos Papazachariou’s book “At Exarcheia in the 80s” is the chronicle of a borderline era. In the historical neighborhood of Athens, in the early 1980s, students, intellectuals, artists, neo-rebetes, unemployed and deadbeats meet, fall in love, create collectively, but most of all discuss, discuss incessantly about all issues: politics, gender, folk culture, relationship between Hellenism and the West, religion, epistemology, criticism.

With heroes of persons that are real but slightly altered, or even completely invented, with straight talking that is not afraid to resort to slang when narration requires it, with multilevel humor ranging from subtle self-sarcasm to big pranks, Zachos’ book at the same time is a rich athenaeogram, as the writer Dimitris Fissas states in his postface, a “semi-historiography”: a quick outline of Greek history through the gaze of the irresistible central hero, Aspromallis. E. Zachos-Papazachariou knows Exarchia well. He spent many years in their heart, circulated in their bars and cafes, and he socialized wiht their inhabitants but also with those who were there for a life outside the conventions, a life dedicated to friendship, love, creation and reflection. Characteristic and recognizable physiognomy of this setting, he wrote an exciting book, combining real and invented persons, true and imaginary stories. A book that exudes joy of life and a positive insurrectional spirit, and at the same time a reminder of how it was and how it could still be a youthful, artistic neighborhood of the metropolis. The photograph of the cover belongs to Marili Zarkou.
