Michel Tournier was born in 1924 in Paris and studied philosophy at the Sorbonne and the University of Tubingen in Germany. After failing his exams to become a teacher, he worked in radio and television while collaborating with Plon Publications as an essay reader and translator. In 1967 he published “Vendredi ou Les limbes du Pacifique” (Friday), a free adaptation of the story of Robinson Crusoe. This novel, which was honored with the Grand Prize for the Novel by the French Academy, immediately ranked him among the great writers of his generation. A little later, a young readers edition was published entitled “Vendredi ou La vie sauvage” (Friday and Robinson). In 1970, his novel “Le Roi des Aulnes” (The Erl-King a.k.a. The Ogre ) was unanimously awarded the Prix Goncourt. This dark and dense work was brought to the big screen by Volker Schlondorff in 1996. In 1975, Michel Tournier published “Les Météores” (Gemini), the story of the twins Jean and Paul, which deals with the great subject of the human couple. In his work “Gaspard, Melchior et Balthazar,” he tried to answer with poetry and humor the questions posed by the legend of the Three Magi. In addition to novels, Tournier also wrote short stories (“Le Coq de Bruyere,” “Le Medianoche amoureux”), literary and poetic essays (“Celebrations,” “Le Vol du vampire” and “Le Miroir des idees”), and autobiographical texts (“Le Vent Paraclet” and “Journal extime”). Michel Tournier’s work is inspired by the fascination of myths, although in all his books, he dismantles the mythological and symbolic mechanisms to promote the novel action.
