Alexis-Charles-Henri Clérel de Tocqueville was born on 29 July 1805 in Paris and died on 16 April 1859. He was a French political thinker and historian, one of the most profound exponents of political liberalism in continental Europe in the first half of the 19th century.
His book “Quinze jours dans le desert” is the narrative of a journey to the edge of the advance of European civilization, in contact with the primitive forest, which he undertook during his stay in America between 1831 and 1832.
It was published after his death by Michel Lévy frères in 1861.

In the summer of 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville journeyed to the very limits of American civilization. The admiration and awe before a still pristine nature and the march of relentless urbanization westward inspired the author in this surprisingly timely narrative that brings the myth of the frontier to life.
