The multi-laureate author Bernard Villiot and the renewer of the French iconographic tradition Antoine Guilloppé have created the intensely tender story of a black cat that is outcast because of its color. Alone among the people who hate him, identifying him with the evil and therefore giving him the name “Mephisto,” the independent alley cat of the story will seek refuge in the countryside, hoping to find his quietude among the animals. But winter is harsh, and Mephisto is forced to return to the city. There he will find himself be in front of a surprise. Those who despised him and they were driving him out of everywhere, are now enthusiastically welcoming him, because he is their savior, the eliminator of the rats that ravage everything. His former persecutors now want to decorate him, filling him with honors. But he will not give up his freedom. The story of the Mephisto cat talks to children in an affecting and simple way about the value of the different and the importance of tolerance, teaching them that what we fear can ultimately enrich our lives. It is at the same time a hymn to the freedom of an individual who is indifferent to fleeting glory if he wants to maintain his autonomy.
