Precise and exquisite as a jewel, Enard’s book is the portrait of a Renaissance artist who is confronted with the beauty of the Muslim world, and at the same time an exciting reflection on the act of creation.
When, in the spring of 1506, Michelangelo started the journey to Constantinople, having left halfway through the construction of the Mausoleum of Pope Julius II in Rome, he was well aware that he was in danger of provoking the wrath of the authoritarian Pontiff. But how could he have ignored the letter of Sultan Bayezid who was calling him to build a magnificent bridge in the Golden Horn? So the great sculptor decided to make the trip. Precise and exquisite as a jewel, Enard’s book is the portrait of a Renaissance artist who is confronted with the beauty of the Muslim world, and at the same time an exciting reflection on the act of creation. Reconstructing a few forgotten weeks, using authentic material such as the notes and letters of Michelangelo from Constantinople, Mathias Enard captures the intricate relationship between the West and the East through the symbolism of an incomplete architectural gesture: a bridge that was never built, but was depicted in the artist’s notebook as a nod from the other bank of civilization. The enigmatic title of the book comes from an excerpt of Rudyard Kipling, quoted in Enard’s book as a motto: “A story is true only in the time you narrate it. And and since they be children tell them of battles and kings, horses, devils, elephants, and angels, but omit not to tell them of love and suchlike.” Goncourt des Lycéens 2010 Award
