The Ladies’ Paradise

16,20

The novel The Ladies’ Paradise, written in 1883, in the colloquium of Zola’s literary success, deals with the competition, the conquest and the triumph of the trade of the “novelties”, which the Paris department stores inaugurated at the expense, of course, of the smaller stores; the book talks about the omnipotence of money and love, about the unprecedented progress that demolished and killed a part of French society.

As Christophe Chantepy, Ambassador of France in Greece, mentions in the preface of the book , this masterpiece of Émile Zola is one of the main works of the Les Rougon-Macquart series, one of the cornerstones of the naturalistic novel, where the intrigue is born in a decor and an environment perfectly documented. Zola’s intent was to portray as well as possible the social rise of a family and the book is a chronicle of the rise of a humble but ambitious woman in the trade. To achieve this, the writer accumulates a colossal amount of information and wanders in the department stores, which allows him to faithfully deliver the atmosphere that emerges through delightful descriptions. The novel The Ladies’ Paradise, written in 1883, in the colloquium of Zola’s literary success, deals with the competition, the conquest and the triumph of the trade of the “novelties”, which the Paris department stores inaugurated at the expense, of course, of the smaller stores; the book talks about the omnipotence of money and love, about the unprecedented progress that demolished and killed a part of French society, that of micro-traders, who could not follow the way of thinking of these times neither understand the operation of the new trade rules. The edition contains a postface by the historian Jeanne Gaillard, as contained in Gallimard publications Au Bonheur des Dames edition of 1980, and a chronology written by the translator of the work, Iphigenia Botouropoulou.
