The novel Le Roi des Aulnes (The Erl-King) borrows its title from one of Goethe’s most famous poems and is a variation on the legendary theme of the child-killing monster, as well as a depiction of a particular German fantasy. The plot of this dense and complex novel is the story of an ogre that intersects for a moment with the history of Germany and brings to life some of the most tragic events of the 20th century, linking them to some of the most deeply rooted fictional figures in our collective unconscious.
Two twins, Jean and Paul, form a brother and sister pair so close that others call them Jean-Paul. But Jean wants to break this chain and tries to get married. Paul manages to thwart this plan. Through multiple adventures and numerous characters, the novel outlines the great theme of the human couple.
